Open source software grants everyone the power of choice for free. Anyone can view and customize open source code as they see necessary. Unlike proprietary content management systems, customers never need to be tied to any web developer or web design agency. The knowledge of thousands of Joomla and WordPress developers and designers is only a click away if you frequent their online discussion forums. Fixes for bugs can be found and implemented quickly and are conveniently logged for future users who encounter similar issues. The best open source version always wins which is unlike the more expensive propriety software, where the code is hidden and you have to pay for fixes. The open source environment simply promotes new ideas and at a fraction of the cost. That is why Joomla, WordPress and other open source web technologies are so vital to providing the best website experience.
Joomla allows you to publish content to your websites instantly. You can completely control the look and feel of one page, selection of pages, or even an entire website through templates and modules. Joomla has a huge directory of extensions which greatly enhance user experience and website functionality. Some of its most popular extensions allow you to build shopping carts, schedule events and translate your website. Even large companies such as Burger King and Nikon are using Joomla. According to Wikipedia, between March 2007 and February 2011 there had been more than 21 million downloads.

WordPress is another open source content management system with built-in blog functionality. You can also manipulate its look and feel by customizing templates and rearranging widgets. Like Joomla, it has a huge directory of plugins that allow you to extend its functionality beyond its base install. If you are like most companies and do not want the “blog” look, you can opt to have a static homepage and just have your blog as a menu item. Blogs boost your search engine rankings, improve communications for a low cost and build your company’s reputation as an industry leader. According to Wikipedia, WordPress is used by over 13% of the 1,000,000 biggest websites and version 3.0 has been downloaded over 32 million times since February 2011.
